Liz Mellalieu | Power of You
Liz Mellalieu attended our Power of You programme and credits it with giving her confidence to take on new challenges.
I’m an associate at Gerald Eve, a firm of Chartered Surveyors. I joined in 2008 as a graduate and qualified as a chartered surveyor in 2010. My role is varied and involves liaising with and providing advice to clients. I also have day-to-day responsibility for a number of personal clients and for identifying new business opportunities.
Along with seven other colleagues, I attended UCan Training’s three-day programme entitled ‘The Power of You’. Before attending, I was intrigued about what it would entail and what benefits there would be for me. However, from Sharon’s initial contact with us, she showed her ability to tailor the course to our individual requirements. It proved to be a thoroughly beneficial and interesting few days.
Benefits to me
The programme has definitely given me a much needed confidence boost and has developed my assertiveness skills.
My main business objective is to identify new business opportunities and this involves presenting to new clients. With this in mind, Sharon provided me with a 7-step model that has been extremely useful and I have already successfully used the framework for new pitches. She also taught me techniques to improve and develop my networking skills.
One of the main difficulties of being a female professional is choosing what to wear to work. On the last afternoon, Sharon introduced us to Katie – a personal stylist. Katie showed us how to achieve a work-wear look without wearing a suit; it was an added bonus and reinforced the message that if you feel confident with the way you look, you will feel confident in your work.
Following the programme, I applied for a promotion and am now an Associate at Gerald Eve. I’m certain my success was partly down to the skills and confidence I learnt on the Power of You programme.
